Ever since the beginning of the world, strange things have been occurring in all parts of the globe. Some of them remain unexplained, and even today, people are still trying to come up with theories that might fill in the holes. However, nearly all theories have never been proven and are just a matter of speculation. Some people are just too skeptical to believe such events are true. Either way, we have collected the top 10 unexplained mysteries for you to judge and maybe even figure out your own theory.
10. The Taos hum
The story of the Taos hum in north-central New Mexico has led to various theories ranging from paranormal activities to secret UFO bases. The ‘hum’ is actually a strange noise, similar to an engine running in the distance, that can be heard anywhere in this town.
It was first reported back in the 1990s and ever since, scientists have been trying to find an answer to the mystery. Even though the sound could be heard by the human ear, no machine was ever able to record it. The reason for this remains unknown. The residents of Taos are still not familiar with the source of such a strange noise.
9. The Bouvet Island
The Bouvet Island is located in the South Atlantic and is one of the most isolated places on Earth. More than 1,000 miles away from the nearest land, the island was never inhabited because of the poor life conditions and unsustainable plant life.
In 1964, a British expedition went on a quest and discovered something no one would expect. They noticed an abandoned lifeboat on the island. Intrigued by that sight, they approached the island to find even more items. The lifeboat was in great condition as well as some of the things laying around; oars, wood and a copper tank. There was no doubt someone had been on the island at that time.
After thoroughly searching the area, they couldn’t find any signs of the passengers or any life on the island whatsoever. The boat had no numbers or any information that would help them track down its origin. To make things even more mysterious, two years later, another British expedition went to the island to find that the boat and all of the items had disappeared. To this day, no one knows what happened on the island and who were the people who supposedly lived there for a short period.
8. The CIA Secret Message
A cryptographic statue at the CIA headquarters called Kryptos has kept the minds of the smartest mathematicians and cryptographers thinking for 25 years. The 12 feet high statue built by Jim Sanborn contains 4 codes which are answers to a riddle. By revealing the 4 codes, one would open the next stage of the mystery which, as Jim stated, would be something similar to a treasure hunt in the CIA.
However, only 3 codes have been solved so far with the fourth one being 97 letters long. Even the smartest code-crackers of the CIA and NSA have given up. In spite of all the efforts, the Kryptos seems to be impossible to solve and remains a true mystery today.
7. The Taman Shud case
During the cold war, in Adelaide, Australia, a man was found dead, washed up on the shore with no ID or any documentation whatsoever. His dental records had no match as though he didn’t exist anywhere. The investigators found the final page of a Persian poem in his pocket. The words “taman shud” were written on it, meaning “finished.”
After going through all the military bases, the police couldn’t find out who the man was, but they did find a man who had a drink with him once. He claimed that the dead guy had a military pension card and his name was ‘Solomonson.’ They assumed the guy was some sort of a spy since the name seemed too fake to be real. After a while, the police managed to find the book from which the page was torn. In there, they found a name of a woman who remained anonymous, and who, after being shown the picture of the man, was terrified and denied to give any information.
They also noticed that the man had a very strangely shaped ear and the woman’s son happened to have the exact same shaped ear. It might be coincidence, but we will never know because the identity of the man has never been discovered.
6. The Belmez Faces
Things were peaceful in the small village of Belmez in Spain until 1971 when strange events began occurring in the house of Maria Pereira. The woman claimed a human face had appeared on her kitchen floor. Disturbed by this, Maria made herself believe it was just a random coincidence and soon after, she changed the floor.
However, new faces began appearing every day. Some of them were small, some big, both male and female, but all of them were unfamiliar. Maria’s house began to attract more and more visitors. Some even speculated Maria herself painted the faces on the floor, but that made no sense since she didn’t profit whatsoever out of the whole situation.
Later, she found out that the house was built around 1830 and stood above a Roman graveyard and that the faces could be the dead souls of people buried under. Paranormal enthusiasts suggested that this was a case of telekinesis and claimed that the expressions of the faces would change according to Maria’s mood. Others remained skeptical about the case.
5. The Voynich Manuscript
A book written in an unrecognizable language called the Voynich Manuscript is believed to be originated from Italy sometime around the 1400s. It is full of illustrations, ranging from biology to astronomy and there are even some cooking recipes in it. The syntax of the language is similar to European languages but not a single world was ever translated.
It is still unknown what this book is about, as well as who wrote it. There is no nation or tribe in history that is known to have used this type of language. What is even more strange is that the book contains images of flowers and plants of today, which hadn’t even been discovered in that time period. Is this book the only thing left behind from creatures who lived before us? Or maybe we are talking about time traveling here? Either way, the manuscript remains an intriguing mystery.
4. The Elian Mor island
No one had lived on the Scottish Elian Mor island in 1900 except three lighthouse keepers who received shipments each month essential for their survival. Usually, the keepers would greet the ship on the shore with much joy, since that had been their only interaction with the rest of the world.
When the crew went to deliver another shipment to the island, they didn’t expect it to be the last one. At their surprise, no one was waiting for them, so they sent a man, Joseph Moore, to check what was going on in the lighthouse. Upon entering, he was surprised to find that two of three coats which usually hang in the hallway were missing. There was food remains on the table as well as a knocked over chair on the floor. The clock on the wall had stopped working. The crew found no signs of any of the three keepers.
They checked the entries in the lighthouse to find that on December 12, one of the keepers claimed that severe winds were circling the island. He stated the winds were far worse than anything he experienced in their whole life. After a series of disturbing messages, the last entry stated “Storm ended, sea calm. God is over all.” However, the lighthouse is visible from the near island of Lewis and strangely, there were no storms reported in the Eilean Mor area during the time of the entry dates. The mystery that occurred on the island still remains unsolved.
3. Oakville blobs
In 1994 in Oakville, Washington, a strange event took place when it started raining. Except that instead of water, gelatinous blobs started falling from the skies. At first, people thought some kind of natural phenomena was happening, but when scientists looked into the blobs, the findings were shocking.
Bacteria and blood cells were contained inside the strange blobs. We’re talking about human white blood cells inside of a substance which fell from the sky. Soon after, people began getting sick and having strange symptoms of the flu until the whole town was infected through a period of 12 weeks. How was it possible for human blood cells to get inside a substance supposedly created through a natural process? This mystery still remains unsolved and many people believe the government had its fingers in this.
2. Pacific Northwest Shores Mystery
Since 2007, a very disturbing event kept happening over and over again. A total of sixteen shoes with socks and detached human feet inside have appeared on Pacific Northwest shores. Most of them found in British Columbia, Canada and Washington state all looked similar, attached to hiking boots or running shoes.
These detached feet and how they got there remains unknown. Some believed they could be the feet of serial killers’ victims or even human traffickers’ victims. Scientists have confirmed that hands and feet are the first body parts to fall off when the body has been exposed to water for longer periods of time, which made people believe these could be the remains of victims of natural disasters. What was strange is that they kept appearing throughout the period of 9 years as some sort of pattern. The mystery, however, remains unsolved, and nobody knows what happened to the people who lost their feet.
1. The Pollock Twins
In the 1950s, John and Florence Pollock were parents of two beautiful young girls, Jacqueline (6) and Joana (11). In 1957, their lives changed drastically when the two daughters were hit by a car and killed on the spot. Their friend, Anthony Layden, died in the accident as well.
Devastated, John and Florence thought that would be the end for them. However, not long after, Florence was pregnant again, and even though the doctors confirmed she was carrying one child, John was convinced she would give birth to reincarnated twins. In October 1958, a miracle happened when Florence gave birth to twins, Gillian and Jennifer. What was strange was that even though they were identical twins, Jennifer had two strange birthmarks which were identical to the ones her dead sister got while bike riding. Strange similarities became obvious and the parents decided to move out of town until the twins grow up a bit.
After a few years, they returned to Hexham and even stranger situations occurred. When they were driving by the school the dead sister used to go to, Jennifer and Gillian got excited and yelled “Our school, our school” even though they had never seen it before, and they weren’t even old enough to go to school yet. When they got into their old house, the twins recognized the old sisters’ toys and knew the names of each and every one of them, even though they were seeing them for the first time. They even began playing the game their sisters used to play. All these events, however, stopped when Jennifer and Gillian outgrew the age of their dead sisters, and ever since then, they lived a normal life. Neither of them remembers anything that took place during this period. Was this a real case of reincarnation? We will never know since the mystery remains unsolved.
